WIth more than 100.000 guests a year Denmarks largest political festival the People’s Democratic Festival on Bornholm is transforming the small town of Allinge into one big event venue. The festival has caused a lot of positive developments for northern Bornholm, but also many practical issues for establishing an infrastructure and hosting so many visiting guests at the same time.
To use the full potential of the People’s Democratic Festival for the benefit of Bornholm and Allinge, there was a need to make an architectural masterplan and development strategy. The goal was to enable synergy establishing facilities and landscapes for the benefit of people living in Alling, for visiting tourists and the festival guests all year round. Sustainability was chosen as a special focus for the masterplan.
Philantropic foundation Realdania sponsored a collaborative architectural competition for three cross-disciplinary teams to each give their proposal to solve the challenge.
To prepare for the competion we made a preparatory analysis including involvement of citizens and associations on Bornholm. Afterwards, we wrote a comprehensive programme for the architectural competition and facilitated the architectural process together with Blue Bakery and ArkitektkonkurrencerDK.
As part of the work we arranged the participation and hosting of a series of events and debates during the People’s Democratic Festival days so architects could work during the festival and use the site as a living lab for testing ideas.
The process resulted in three proposals for strategic masterplans with more than 50 ideas for development of Folkemødet and Allinge. The plans were presented to the public during a big event and exhibition in the Dome of visions in Allinge.
